Picked up Beast, adjusted the saddle four times, and joined the river of bikes heading everywhere at once. This is the view over the first bridge — glasses doing the work, both hands where they should be. Amsterdam cyclists forgave my line choice roughly never, and rang their bells to say so.

First proper stage north, and the windmills arrived exactly on schedule, standing along the water like they had been told to expect me. I rode past, doubled back, rode past again for the glasses clip, then finally stopped and got the real camera out. Three passes for one photo. The wind charged me for all three.

- 15°C, wind force five, they said
Through the Kennemerland dunes the path swings between sand hills and suddenly you can smell the North Sea before you see it. A lighthouse on the horizon, marram grass flat against the ground, and my speed down to 14 km/h without a single metre of climbing. The Dutch call it wind force five. I call it a hill that follows you.

You cannot cycle past the town where the stroopwafel was invented. That is not an opinion, it is route planning. The warm one from the market stall glued itself over the coffee cup and softened while I checked the map, which is the entire design brief of the thing. 41 km to Kinderdijk. It could wait ten minutes.

- 13°C, clear, still — a miracle
I timed the whole route so this stage would land on a clear morning, and for once the forecast honoured the deal. Nineteen mills along the dike, water on both sides, one other cyclist who nodded like we had both won something. This is what the postcard promises and the postcard, for once, undersells it.
Overheard · Utrecht · 16:40
"Where did you ride from today?" — "Gouda, into the wind." — "Into the wind is not a direction here. It is the only direction." He didn't charge me for the tube.

Total distance, 621 kilometres. Total climbing, 214 metres — most of it bridges and one enthusiastic overpass near Rotterdam. I have single climbs at home four times taller than this entire country, and not one of them ever made me work as hard as the polder did with the wind up.

- 16°C, headwind, obviously
The last full day was dead straight dike roads under a sky doing all the scenery by itself. Same road, two hours apart: first the clouds stacked like cargo, then the light shutting down the fields one at a time. Nothing to climb, nowhere to hide, 96 km of exactly this. I loved it in a way I don't fully trust.

- Last frame
Back in Amsterdam with 621 on the computer and the same slow puncture whispering in the rear tyre. I leaned Beast on the bridge rail where I had taken the first photo two weeks earlier and let it have its portrait. Heavy, unkillable, three gears, zero complaints. The best bikes are the ones you argue with and lose.
