Muscat refuses to be a skyline; a royal decree keeps the buildings low and white, so the city lies along its bays like script on a page. From the harbour ridge the corniche draws one clean crescent between the water and the ophiolite — rock that used to be ocean floor, now holding up watchtowers. An honest capital. The mountains do the boasting.

- Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muscat

- 34°C, hard light
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque seats twenty thousand and whispers anyway. Outside, the dome and minaret stand in white against a sky with no opinion of clouds; inside hangs a chandelier the size of a modest apartment. The courtyard marble at noon functions as a griddle, which the ushers mention with practised timing.

- Wadi Shab
- 11:30
- 36°C, hot, still
Forty minutes of boulder-hopping up the gorge, then the canyon closes and the water goes that mineral turquoise that looks invented. The last stretch you swim, camera abandoned with the shoes, to a waterfall inside a rock chamber. Some subjects insist on being memories instead. I photographed the approach and made peace with the terms.

- Coast road near Quriyat

- 30°C, dusk
Coming back down the coast road at dusk we passed a village folded into the foothills, lights coming on white against rock going blue-black. Salim slowed without being asked; this is his mother's town, and the K-1 got two frames from the window before the corner took it away. Sometimes the itinerary is somebody's biography.
he then talked family history for forty kilometres. better than any guidebook.

- Nizwa Fort
- 10:50
- 35°C, dry heat
The fort's great round tower was built over a filled well shaft — cannon platform above, and inside a spiral of murder holes and date-honey chutes for discouraging visitors of the wrong kind. On the courtyard side a school group in white dishdashas crossed in loose formation, the future of the country walking through its sternest architecture without looking up. Both frames felt like the same photograph, four centuries apart.
- Nizwa souq
48°C: the dashboard reading at the Wahiba edge, which Salim called 'nice for April'. 500 kilos: the approximate weight of dates a single Nizwa palm can give in a season, per the man who sold me half a kilo and a lecture.

- Wahiba Sands
- 17:55
- 31°C, clear, cooling fast
The dunes run north to south in ridges the wind has been drafting for ten thousand years. At the end of the day the sand stops being a colour and becomes a gradient — apricot on the windward faces, violet in the slip shadows. Salim took the crests at an angle I chose not to supervise. I braced the camera and trusted the suspension's judgement over mine.
- Mutrah corniche, Muscat
- 06:35
- 29°C, sea haze
- Last frame
Haze off the water, the mosque minaret grey against grey, one fishing boat idling out past the moorings. Twelve days of hard light and the country chose to say goodbye in watercolour. I drank karak on the corniche wall and made the quietest frame of the trip last.
