The first days are river days. You cross the Marsyangdi and cross it back, and each bridge is a little higher and a little colder than the last. I tell clients to enjoy the green while it lasts. Above Chame the pines take over, and above the pines there is nothing soft at all.

- 11°C, sun, wind in the gorge
Whatever you think you are carrying, a porter passed me on the bridge before Chame with a client's duffel, a gas cylinder and a crate of drinks, and he was the one who said namaste first. Seventeen seasons and I still move to the uphill side to let them by. That is the rule, and it is also respect.

- 4°C, afternoon cloud building
Everyone rests two nights in Manang because the body needs it, and Manang knows it. Bakeries, a cinema running the same three mountain films, and Annapurna III standing over the stupas checking on everybody. I sent the clients up the viewpoint and back. Climb high, sleep low, eat cake.

Dal bhat twice a day above Manang, no exceptions in my group. It is not superstition, it is logistics: rice for the legs, dal for the morning, seconds for free. The kitchen at Yak Kharka had fresh greens carried up that week. At 4000 metres that is not a side dish, that is news.

- -4°C, clear, hard wind above
The sign says 4018. Above here the grass gives up and the wind starts working night shifts. This is where I watch clients properly: how they eat, how they sleep, whether their jokes get worse. Headache at Yak Kharka is information. Headache at Phedi is a decision.
- Thorong High Camp
- 04:20
High Camp does not let anyone sleep properly, that is its job. We started at four twenty with headtorches and tea. The first number is the altitude we woke at. The second is how much oxygen your blood thinks that is, roughly, compared to home.
Overheard · Thorong Phedi · 19:10
"Your group is fast." — "Fast down here. The pass will slow them to honest speed." We have this conversation every season. The pass has never once failed to do it.

- 08:05

- Last frame
Three hours of switchbacks in torchlight, then the light came up grey and gold at the same time and there it was: the cairn, the sign, the flags shredding themselves for everyone's luck. I have crossed Thorong La more times than I can prove and my chest still does the same small thing at the top. Then you go down, because the pass is only ever half the day.
