Everyone fights for the observation car and the real seats are the doorways. From Haputale the line runs along the edge of the escarpment and the whole southern plain opens up under your feet at twenty kilometres an hour. Sanduni, professional train sceptic, did not move from the door for two hours. I have photographic proof and instructions never to publish it.

Nine Arch Bridge at 06:40, before the café crowd, from the path through the tea where the pluckers walk. The blue train came across right on the late side of on time, which here is a form of punctuality. A hundred years old, built without steel, still carrying the morning service. My grandfather rode this line to school. I finally understand why he never stopped mentioning it.

Tea is planted in contour lines, so the hills wear their own topographic map. Between Ella and Haputale the rows run to the cloud line and stop, like the drawing ran out of ink. It is a working landscape before it is a beautiful one — every bush in this frame gets plucked by hand every seven days. I walked one row's length and revised my opinion of every cup I have ever rushed.

The guesthouse balcony hangs over the valley, and at four the rain arrived on schedule and turned the view into weather. We did nothing. Genuinely nothing — two chairs, a pot of the estate's own broken orange pekoe, the gap flickering in and out of the mist. In Colombo I schedule my sitting still. Up here it is the default activity.

Kandy to Ella: 168 kilometres of track, laid through these hills a hundred and thirty years ago. Our average speed: 24 kilometres per hour. Nobody on that train, including the driver, would have taken the highway instead.

The easy summit, and at six in the morning that is its whole charm. Forty minutes up through the tea, the last light of the night still in the west, and Ella Rock across the gap holding up the sunrise. A dog from the village came the entire way, supervised the photography, and led us back down for its fee of one egg hopper.

Ella Gap frames the whole southern plain, and at sunset the light pours through it like the hills are emptying for the night. We watched from the rocks with tea in steel cups from the kade below. Madagascar took an ocean, the Hebrides took three flights and a ferry. This took a train from my own station. The best light of the year was a seven-hour ride from home.
