Day three, State Highway 80, and Aoraki sat at the end of the road for forty straight kilometres like a destination invented by a tourism board. I drove it at ninety with both hands on the wheel and made the van's previous renters proud. Every pull-off had one campervan in it doing exactly what we were doing.

The Church of the Good Shepherd is small, stone, and outnumbered forty to one at all times. I waited out two tour buses with a thermos and got ninety seconds of it standing alone against the lake. The water really is that colour; it is glacial flour, not a filter, and I checked because I did not believe it either.

- 7°C, wind funnelling down-valley
Ten kilometres of boardwalk and swing bridges pointed straight at the country's tallest mountain, and the whole track hums when the wind gets under the middle bridge. At the end there is a lake with icebergs in it in April. I filmed the glacier face for five minutes and the audio is entirely wind and one German man saying wow at intervals.
- Somewhere on SH8
2,143 kilometres driven, eleven meat pies consumed. The ratio held remarkably stable at one pie per 195 kilometres, which I am prepared to defend as the natural constant of South Island travel. Petrol stations here grade their pies like wine and they are correct to.

- 5°C, cloud below, clear above
Sixteen hundred metres of switchbacks through sheep who have seen it all before. I started in cloud, swore at the cloud, and then walked out of the top of it into a sunset that made the whole queue at the summit photo ledge go quiet at once. Down in the dark by headtorch, knees filing complaints the entire way.

- Frankton, Queenstown

- 8°C, frost gone by ten
Nobody puts the supermarket run in the highlights reel, but the PAK'nSAVE in Frankton has the Remarkables behind the car park and honestly it is a better backdrop than most viewpoints I have queued for. Bought gas for the cooker, sausages, and a fourth beanie, because the other three were somewhere in Trevor.

Shotover canyon · 14:45 · barely missing rocks, professionally
Chest mount, 4K, and a driver whose job description is officially 'miss the rocks, but barely'. The 360 spins put a wall of glacier-blue water over the whole boat and the footage sounds like fourteen people discovering the same vowel. Cold water straight down the collar and I would queue again right now.

- 10°C, rain, correctly
It rains here two hundred days a year and we drew one of them, which turns out to be the premium ticket: every cliff grows a waterfall and Mitre Peak stands in the middle of it wearing the cloud like it was fitted. The boat pushed its bow under Stirling Falls and the entire deck screamed and nobody left. My lens had water on it for two hours and every frame is better for it.

- Last frame
Last camp before the drive north. I slid Trevor's door open at six and let the sunrise in with the cold, made tea on the two-burner, and did not photograph the mountains at all. Fourteen days, two thousand kilometres, and the frame I keep going back to is the inside of a rented van looking out.
